Beginning in early October, the U.S.-Mexico border has been brought to the forefront of both local and national news outlets. This has given students at Point Loma Nazarene University an opportunity to join in the conversation.
PLNU’s main campus is in San Diego’s Point Loma neighborhood and is about 25 miles from the San Ysidro Port of Entry. According to the U.S. General Services Administration, the border crossing at San Ysidro is “the busiest in the Western Hemisphere”. On average, the GSA estimates more than 90,000 people, by car or on foot, cross through this entry daily.
This semester, 10 PLNU students had the opportunity to take part in a “Special Topics in Journalism” course, JRN350, with an emphasis in covering the U.S.-Mexico border. The course was led by Laura Castañeda, a professor at San Diego City College and former reporter at an ABC-affiliate in Tucson, AZ where she covered stories on the U.S.-Mexico border.
From September to December, students in the course have developed stories involving San Diego’s border community. Some of the topics have been covered by other news outlets and others had not yet been discovered.
