What’s the best thing to do over summer? I may be a bit biased, but for me it’s sitting in a dark, air-conditioned theater with a nice, cool drink and watching a film instead of baking in the 100-plus degree weather that is permeating the outdoors. So in order to avoid suffering a heat stroke, here are some films that you should definitely catch over the summer.
April 27: Avengers: Infinity War
The nineteenth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the third Avengers film, and the culmination of 10 years’ worth of films, it’d be impossible to not tell you to go and see this film. With the same creative team that created Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War, this film is bound to deliver jaw-dropping action, plenty of hilarious lines, and fantastic character work throughout.
May 18: Deadpool 2
With the first Deadpool being a surprise success, it’s hard not to be excited about Deadpool 2, especially with one of the co-directors of John Wick taking the reins of the franchise. If the film is anything like the trailers have been like so far, the film will be littered with meta-humor and crazy action sequences but will hopefully also have the same amount of heart that the first film had.
May 25: Solo: A Star Wars Story
Would I be a Star Wars fan if I didn’t tell you to go see a Star Wars film? No, I don’t think I would be. Even though this film, which follows a young Han Solo, set a little over 10 years before the original Star Wars, is something that I didn’t really care for, the trailers have sold me for the most part. I know most may still be skeptical, but if you give it a shot, you may just be surprised.
July 27: Mission: Impossible – Fallout
It’s kind of shocking to think that a sixth Mission: Impossible film is being released this year simply because most franchises like this peter out by now, but not this franchise. The previous two films, Ghost Protocol and Rogue Nation, have been the best of the franchise. If the trailer is anything to go off of, Fallout will be even better.
August 3: Christopher Robin
I never knew that I needed a live-action Winnie the Pooh interacting with Ewan McGregor until I saw the teaser trailer for this film. Honestly, just thinking about that interaction makes my heart happy and that’s why this film is on the list. This film looks like a nice look back into childhood, which sometimes is all that you need in your life.
If you don’t feel like leaving your couch though, I do have some recommendations for what to catch up on that you probably missed earlier in the year.
Thoroughbreds
This is my personal favorite film of the year so far. This indie dark-comedy thriller (which really, if you hate that genre description, you probably won’t like the film) follows two teenage girls on their plan to kill one of their step-fathers. Anchored by great performances from Anya Taylor-Joy and Olivia Cooke, this film is simply a fascinating watch that entrances you throughout.
Game Night
If you’re in the mood for a really fun action-comedy, then Game Night is the film for you. With several ridiculously funny scenes, a couple really well-done action set pieces, and plenty of great performances, this is a perfect film for you if you’re by yourself but want an enjoyable film or if you’re surrounded by friends and you want to laugh together.
Black Panther
I’m just throwing this on here in case you haven’t seen it. It’s probably still in theaters which is even better. This film contains one of the most interesting hero-villain dichotomies in recent years, all thanks to the fantastic work from Chadwick Boseman and especially Michael B. Jordan, whose performance is worth the price of admission alone.
Game of Thrones: Seasons 1-7
This show is essentially a 70-hour film, so it counts. If you’ve been living under a rock and have never heard of this show, it’s essentially a more realistic, brutal, and heart-wrenching version of Lord of the Rings. It’s doable to watch the entire show in around two weeks if this is one of the only things that you do with your life (I know from experience).
These films are only fraction of what has been released and what is going to released this year, so even if none of these interest you, there will be at least something around that should peak your interest.
