With every summer comes a new myriad of high-budget, action-packed, crowd-pleasing films that bring out gigantic crowds and box office numbers. Many people can’t go to everything though, so here are some of the most promising films that are going to be released in the upcoming months.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (May 5th)
The sequel to the original Guardians of the Galaxy, which is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, looks like it is going to be crazy. Bright colors, loud music, and action abound in the trailers and early reviews are promising, so hopefully, the final product will live up to the first film and the rest of the MCU.
Alien: Covenant (May 19th)
The Alien franchise is back! This is one of my personal favorite film franchises and the first two films are classics. There have been several missteps of late for the franchise, including the previous film, Prometheus, but the trailers have been fantastic and it looks like Ridley Scott is going back to the original feel of the franchise.
Wonder Woman (June 2nd)
The first female led superhero film since 2004 is finally here. This version of Wonder Woman was introduced in last year’s Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and everything that has been released so far shows nothing, but promise. Hopefully it’s a strong film and will help out the DC Extended Universe and female led superhero films in general going forward.
The Mummy (June 9th)
A modern reboot of the Universal monster starring Tom Cruise. Need I say more? I feel like I don’t need, but I will. The trailers have been great for the most part and pretty much any Tom Cruise project is always worth taking a chance with. The only trepidation that I have with this film is that it is a first time director handling the project, but I definitely think it’s worth taking a chance on.
Transformers: The Last Knight (June 23rd)
The Transformers franchise is back with the fifth film in the franchise. The last one made over a billion dollars despite its critical failure and this one is possibly poised to do the same. The trailers so far haven’t been great, but I doubt that is going to stop people from seeing it opening weekend.
Spider-Man: Homecoming (July 7th)
Another Spider-Man movie?!? Yep, but this is the first one that is in the MCU after Tom Holland’s Peter Parker/Spider-Man was introduced in last year’s Captain America: Civil War, which is actually very similar to Wonder Woman’s journey to the big screen come to think of it. The trailers have been really fun and hopefully this new solo film for Spidey will be a step up from his lasting solo outing.
War for the Planet of the Apes (July 14th)
This film is probably my most excited film of the year, other than Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The previous film in the trilogy, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, is one of my top 10 favorite films ever and this film looks to continue the trend of being incredible, if the trailers are anything to be believed. And if Caesar, the main ape in this trilogy dies, I am going to be in a fetal position in the theater in a pool of tears.
Dunkirk (July 21st)
Christopher Nolan is finally back after his last film, Insterstellar, debuted in 2014. Nolan is exploring a different avenue than he ever has in the past, which is a war film which is based on true events. The trailers have been intense and this looks like it may be Nolan’s Saving Private Ryan and possibly get early Oscar buzz.
Hopefully at least one of these films caught your interest and you will go out and support them. Even if they didn’t though, you should just go see a film anyway in order to escape that summer heat for a couple of hours.
