In Honor of Earth Day: Four Simple Ways to Lead and More Sustainable Lifestyle

Living an eco-friendly life can often seem like a daunting and difficult task, but even small changes to daily habits can lead to a more sustainable lifestyle. Here are four hacks for beginning a more eco-friendly life without becoming overwhelmed in the process.

  1. Switch out your plastic toothbrush for a bamboo one. Nearly one billion plastic toothbrushes end up in landfills in America every day, according to Ecoplanet Bamboo, and they are not biodegradable. Bamboo toothbrushes are biodegradable and work just as well as your plastic one. Head over to Target, Walmart, Amazon or other large retailers to pick one up today!
  2. Carry a metal straw with you wherever you go. Metal straws are a great alternative to plastic ones, which end up littering our landfills and oceans by the millions every day. You can keep one in your car, purse and backpack so that you can use it anytime you need a straw. Start refusing straws when you go to restaurants or fast food chains and pull out your metal straw instead.
  3. Skip your Starbucks run and make your own coffee instead. By purchasing Fair Trade coffee at a local store such as Trader Joe’s, you help not only the environment but also workers around the world. When you make your own coffee, make sure to pour it in a reusable to-go mug so that you don’t have to throw away a cup!
  4. Start making more conscious decisions when shopping for clothes. Many clothing companies practice sourcing methods harmful to the environment. Luckily, there are several apps and websites that can help you determine which companies are caring for the environment in their practices! Some apps to look out for include: Good on You, Not My Style, and Global Citizen.
