Grab a Mitt, a Bat and a Baseball: The Sandlot’s Back

A TV series spinoff of the 1993 movie, “The Sandlot,” is in the works, according to director, David Mickey Evans, on “The Rain Delay” podcast. The quote “Legends never die” will take on a whole new meaning as Smalls, Bennie the Jet Rodriguez, Ham, Squints, Yeah-Yeah and the rest of ‘The Sandlot’ legends make their way to the TV screen.

“I’ll definitely watch it,” said Austin Waechter, a junior PLNU managerial and organizational communication student. “It was my favorite movie as a kid.”

The original film follows the story of Scotty Smalls, the new kid of a San Fernando Valley neighborhood. He stumbles across the sandlot and the eight young men who consider it a second home. After they lose a signed Babe Ruth baseball to “the Beast,” the neighborhood dog, the crew must band together to save the game.

Through their love of baseball, summertime adventures and friendship, ‘The Sandlot’ became an instant classic.

Evans told the podcast host, Cooperstown Kurt, “I already got all the original cast members back. It takes place in 1984, when they’re all like 33-years-old, and they all have children of their own.”

Tom Guiry (Smalls), Mike Vitar (Benny the Jet), Patrick Renna (Ham), Chauncey Leopardi (Squints), Marty York (Yeah-Yeah), Brandon Quentin Adams (DeNunez), Grant Gelt (Bertram), Victor DiMattia (Timmons) and Shane Obedzinkski (Repeat) will make their return in the series, ensuring that “The Sandlot” will live on “for…ev…er.”

“I’m excited to see what they’ll do with it, but I’m also skeptical where they could take it,” said PLNU elementary education junior, Kelsey Sottile.

The 1993 film celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2018.  The cast reunited on the Dodger’s Stadium field in June of last year wearing Dodger’s jerseys with the names of the characters the world has come to know and love.

As 2019 rolled around, the cast and crew had something new to celebrate. Evans announced that he had sold a script for the TV series.  He shared with Cooperstown Kurt that two seasons are already expected. Stay tuned for more information about what network will stream the series and when it will air.
