Many surprising wins happened this year at the 2019 Grammys and people are still in shock. According to Vox, The Grammys “are the most unpredictable of the major awards shows,” and many winner predictions turned out to be inaccurate. Many of the big winners for the night were not what most were expecting.
The big wins for the night included:
Album of the Year: “Golden Hour,” Kacey Musgraves
Best Country Album: “Golden Hour,” Kacey Musgraves
Best Rap Album: “Invasion Of Privacy,” Cardi B
Best Pop Vocal Album: “Sweetener,” Ariana Grande
Record of the Year: “This Is America,” Childish Gambino
Song of the Year: “This Is America,” Donald Glover & Ludwig Goransson
Kacey Musgraves winning album of the year was very shocking to most, but some may say she is most worthy of the award. Musgraves had a busy night; besides her two performances, including the tribute to Dolly Parton and her solo performance, and her album of the year win for Golden Hour, she also won Best Country Album, Best Country Song for “Space Cowboy” and Best Country Solo Performance for “Butterflies.” She was nominated for four Grammys and ended the night with four Grammys in hand.
Freshman, Katie Holder expresses that she is a huge Kacey fan. “I expected she was going to win best country album but I was shocked when she won album of the year. The nominees were so competitive and she shocked everyone I think. Needless to say, I have listened to nothing but Golden Hour since Sunday.”
Even though most were happy about Kacey’s big win, people thought the Black Panther soundtrack had the Album of the Year title in the bag. Holder shares that it was her favorite album of the year.
“It was so complex and featured so many different artists and different styles. No album has done what Kendrick did with this album. He also highlighted the African sounds used in the movie which was really cool.”
Freshman, commercial music major Allie Robertson adds that “Black Panther was deserving of a Grammy for all of the talent and unique work that was featured on that album and it’s a shame it went under-recognized.”
Another person who was recognized greatly for their music this night was Childish Gambino for his song “This Is America.” This song won four major categories. According to Billboard, “the track touches on gun violence, racism and discrimination in America and is also one of the most overtly political tracks to win the award.” The four categories “This Is America” won were Song of the Year, Best Music Video, Record of the Year and Best Rap/Sung Performance. Despite Gambino’s success this year, he failed to show up to the Grammys and it is still a mystery as to why he failed to show.
The 2019 Grammys was another year of new successes and will be remembered for years to come for its shocking outcomes.
