Designers, models and bloggers gathered last week in New York to showcase their lines for Fall 2013 and Spring/Summer 2014. St. John, a high-fashion designer, introduced us to the cape dress for fall, and bloggers and street stylists alike affirmed the blazer as a staple for the closet. Here are just a few ways to wear the trends seen on the runways and in the streets.
Street Couture: This concept requires dressing down the highest fashions pulled straight from designers. Take a cape dress from the runway show at St. John and pair it with some edgy sneakers or booties and stud jewelry. Perhaps Balenciaga heels, a black pantsuit and motorcycle jacket. These pieces are high quality couture, well-made and tailored but dressed down with accessories and accents that give off a streetwise, moto-chic vibe.
“As much as I want to say that wearing all white everything is probably the easiest,” says sophomore Fashion Merchandising major Cassie Van Loo, “I have yet to survive a meal without destroying whatever I’m wearing…so by default I am going to go with the edgy biker chick look.” Sophomores Dami Shin and Arnelle Baptista showcase this trend wearing edgy pieces with feminine, couture touches.

Cozied Up: This trend is perfect for the fall season, working well with items that were on trend last spring. Pair a high-waisted leather skirt with a simple long sleeve crop top or bralette and cozy sweater. Neutral colors and chunky knits with chic accessories are what create this look. Try easy, sporty T-shirts with leather or floral on the bottom, as well. The idea is to be comfortable in your six-inch heels.

Wear Your Whites: Classic pieces in a classic color. White shouldn’t make up your whole wardrobe, but this fall consider adding a few white pieces such as a white blazer, white chiffon top and white skinny jeans.
“I love the clean, chic look of an all-white ensemble, especially one with a bit of edge,” writes global trend reporter and Nordstrom blogger Crystal Nicodemus on Nordstrom blog “The Thread.”
“White is everywhere. Whoever said you can’t wear white after Labor Day was clearly mistaken,” Van Loo said.
Senior and Men’s Specialist at Prada, Ariss Williams agrees with Van Loo saying “Due to the weather in San Diego you’re not likely to see people in leather and fur, so the most translatable trend from the runway is wearing whites.” Take a look at Joanna Hilman, BCBG MAXAZRIA and J. Crew for additional ideas on how to wear your whites.

Fashion Week runways showcased minimalist lines with mixed prints as we transition to fall. Trousers, blazers, crisp shirts and shift dresses were a common theme throughout the collections. Check out the stores and collections for pieces to create your own version of these fall trends.
