Disney is on a roll with their new and improved live action films. They have proven time and time again that they are still relevant and keep using techniques, casts and crews that represent our world today.

This time they have taken on another famous children’s story, A Wrinkle in Time, which is based off Madeleine L’Engle’s first book in her Time Quintet series. With Director Ava Duvernay coming off of the acclaimed 2014 movie Selma, one would expect her to give the female lead an even stronger role within the film where a young girl goes on a mission to find her father and ultimately ends up finding herself.

The movie is filled with three very strong and diverse female actresses, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling, and none other than Oprah Winfrey, as Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who, and Mrs. Which, respectively.

Although I expected these women to be the stars of the film, the true star was breakout actress, Storm Reid. At just 14, she managed to show such raw talent as we watch her deal with day-to-day struggle that many of us have gone through within our teen lives.

This story is a beautiful tale of self-discovery that not only touches on the different struggles children face when trying to figure out who they are, but also looks into the struggles that adults face.

It proves that no matter your age, there will always be someone or something that may discourage you or put you down, but there will always be people who stand with you and believe in you regardless.

Throughout all the self-discovery, there is a lot of lightheartedness and comedy, as each “Mrs.” has their own sense of humour throughout the movie, and Zach Galifianakis also makes a special appearance that gives some comic relief to some of the seriousness within the film.

I do suggest that you skip watching this movie in 3D. The CGI can be a bit overwhelming at times, even to the point where you may feel like you are within this sci-fi fantasy world.

Overall, the message behind this movie is great, the acting is fantastic, but the CGI was far too over the top for my taste and made a real wrinkle in my brain at times when trying to keep up with some of the twists and turns.
