Free classes at CorePower Yoga

CorePower Yoga studio on Rosecrans Street offers a free way to unwind from a busy week.

Sundays at 7 p.m. the studio holds a beginners yoga class. First-time guests are given a free mat rental as well as access to a full locker room. Even those who have never attempted yoga are welcome, because the class is taught with newcomers in mind.

Current CorePower instructor and PLNU alumni Shawn Wroughton says the class is a great way to refocus during the week.

“It is a the perfect place to de-stress, build a community, and turn your attention inward.”

Bring comfortable clothing, water and a mat and prepare for an hour of relaxation and stretching in an 80-degree studio. An instructor guides the class accompanied by soothing music that plays in the background to create a peaceful environment. CorePower studio manager Alyssa Brown said she knows that slowing down and taking time to relax is crucial, especially for college students. She says yoga is entirely healthy and benefits the “cardiovascular system, muscular strength, and flexibility.”

CorePower’s one-hour-a-week class is a wonderful outlet “for students who played sports in high school and want to continue staying active,” says Brown.“Yoga classes are a great way to keep health at the forefront of your mind.”

This class makes the balance of school, health, and a social life more manageable.

CorePower welcomes new students, men and women alike. Although yoga seems to be a primarily female exercise, the male demographic is growing. Brown says her studio has a 70:30 male to female ratio while other studios usually only have an 80:20 ratio.

Additional beginner’s classes are weekdays at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. On top of that, a free week pass to all classes taught at CorePower is available as well for those who really enjoy the beginners class. Also, reduced student rates are offered for monthly memberships to the studio.
