Tapingo & Grubhub Join Forces

Tapingo is a saving grace when time between classes is running thin and you need a pick-me-up. Tapingo is now partnered with Grubhub to bring off-campus food onto campus through the Tapingo app.

Tapingo is a smartphone application used by colleges across the country that allows users to place an order through the app and pick it up when it is ready. PLNU students can use it to order food from Bobby B’s and Point Break Cafe.  Grubhub is also a smartphone application that allows users to order food from participating restaurants in the area and have it delivered to their doorstep with a delivery fee. “We, Point Break or Bobby B’s, do not offer delivery. Tapingo provides us their services and we pay a fee to them,” said PLNU Sodexo Retail Manager Erick Cubero.

Sophomore education major Olivia Fell ordered from Taco Bell through the Tapingo application on a Sunday night. “The ordering process was easy because I did not have to download another app onto my phone. The delivery fee was smaller than I thought it would be and they knew exactly where my dorm was,” said Fell. She had to enter a credit card into her Tapingo account because she could not use Sea Lion dollars. “If I did not have a car at school, this would be a good a option. It was very similar to when I ordered through UberEats and Postmates,” said Fell. The price charged on the Tapingo app was the same price as ordering it through Grubhub app.

According to a Grubhub press release from September 25, 2018, Grubhub bought Tapingo for $150 million dollars. This partnership now allows users to order food from Grubhub through their Tapingo app. “We value the college student population, many of whom we hope become life-long Grubhub diners with their first order. Tapingo makes students’ lives easier, allows merchants to efficiently capitalize on online ordering, and enables colleges and universities to give students the technology they’ve come to expect,” said Grubhub’s founder and chief executive officer Matt Maloney in the September press release.

When a Grubhub order is placed through the Tapingo app, it will be processed through Grubhub and delivered by a Grubhub employee. Any credit on that is on the Tapingo app (including Sea Lion Dollars and Dining dollars) cannot be used for Grubhub orders. Some restaurants students can order from include Cotija’s Cocina Mexicana, Rubio’s Coastal Grill and Jack in the Box.
