Stay Spooky San Diego

There’s nothing quite like a global pandemic to make this October feel extra spooky. While San Diego boasts a seemingly endless summer, fall and Halloween-themed events still abound. Even if the smell of pumpkin spice awakens your gag reflex at the slightest whiff, there are still fall-themed events everyone can enjoy. Here are some things to do to get in the spooky mood.

Halloween Trail at Petco Park — Petco Park, Downtown

From Oct. 23-Nov. 1, the Padres’ field is a one-way pumpkin patch. Follow a trail past candy booths, characters and toys. The Halloween Trail After Dark is available for adults over the age of 21, and classic Halloween movies like “Hocus Pocus” and “Scream” will be shown. Tickets are $20 for adults and $25 for kids.

Haunted Aquarium Remix — Birch Aquarium, La Jolla

For the entire month of October, Birch Aquarium offers outdoor activities in a spooky theme. Animal encounters and kelp mazes are all kid-friendly and can keep your Halloween spirit alive. Tickets are $16 with a student I.D.

Halloween at the Station — Liberty Station, Point Loma

Liberty Station is hosting a virtual costume contest through the month of October. Take a photo anywhere at Liberty Station and post it on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter with the hashtag #HalloweenAtTheStation. Kids, families and pets are all eligible to receive prizes when winners are chosen on Nov. 1.

Ghosts & Gravestones — Old Town

Take a trolley tour of the most haunted sites in San Diego. A popular stop is the Whaley House, a historically haunted home in Old Town. This chilling experience is pricey at $42, but worthwhile if you’re looking for a good scare. The tour is also limited to 50% capacity as a COVID-19 safety measure.

Mr. Jack-O-Lantern’s Pumpkin Patch — La Jolla

Want to carve a pumpkin but feeling nervous about the coronavirus? This La Jolla pumpkin patch offers curbside pickup, online ordering and delivery. If you’re feeling artistic, you can also purchase carving and decorating tools here to make the Mona Lisa of pumpkins.

Honorable mention: Caf Lane — PLNU

Take a stroll down the deserted brick walk of Caf Lane at night. Exhibits include empty chairs, empty tables and absolute silence. Signature creepy critters at this site (the apparently well-fed raccoons) will likely make an appearance. Spookiness guaranteed.
