Breaking a Sweat Without Breaking the Bank

It may be a stereotype, but college students really don’t have a lot of extra cash to throw around and a gym membership can feel out of reach for many. Plus, if you don’t have a car, staying on campus to workout is a limiting factor.

On the surface, it may appear that PLNU’s campus doesn’t have many options for the casual athlete, but with a bit of creativity, breaking a sweat doesn’t have to mean breaking open your piggy bank to pay for a gym membership.

  1. Intramurals: Whether you prefer the competitive edge of Ultimate Frisbee or the more laid back vibes of yoga, Point Loma has options for every type of workout aficionado. Plus, intramurals are at various times throughout the day and week, so there is an activity for every schedule.
  2. Open Gym: Although the hours can be limited, taking advantage of the Golden Gym open hours is a great (and most importantly, free!) chance to use the school gym. If all the treadmills are occupied, grab some free weights and take your sweat session outside on the sidewalk that parallels the gym for a workout with a view.
  3. The Young Hill: Yep, it’s true. The Young Hill is Point Loma’s most hated trek, but gives sophomores calves of steel, so get to walking.
  4. The Track: Yes, it seems like a no-brainer, but don’t forget about the track! If you’re like me and not a runner, take a walk and catch up on your podcasts, or set-up your yoga mat and jump rope on the side of the track and create your own circuit workout. If you can find a couple of friends to join you, even better!
  5. The Cliffs: Depending on the level of activity you’re looking for, walking, running, surfing, swimming and sunbathing are all accessible outdoor activities at Sunset Cliffs. Plus, posing for the perfect PLNU sunset photo is now it’s own Olympic activity, so you better get training.
  6. Your Dorm Room: Free, online workouts are everywhere, and many times, can be completed with zero equipment. Fitness Blender, Nike Training Club and YouTube all have great options, and can be customized based on how much time you have to workout between Netflix binges and scrambling to complete that research paper.
